13mm Engineered Wood Flooring

13mm thick engineered flooring refers to the thickness of the entire board. Wear layers will vary based on the product, but ours are all 2.5mm. This figure determines how much you can sand the floor down, whereas the overall thickness determines how long the floor will last, and how durable it is.

Although wear layer thickness doesn’t make a difference to durability given that the overall thickness is the same, thicker wear layers enable the floor to be sanded more often, making it last longer in high footfall areas. Not everybody opts for thicker ones though, as these are more expensive, so are usually only invested in when necessary. Sanding is used to refresh the floor to how it was at purchase, in terms of removing scuffs and scratches. Generally, a floor can be sanded to the thickness of the wear layer - if this is 2mm, you can sand it twice, if it is 6, you can sand it 5-6 times. As sanding can occur every 15 years, even the thinnest floors may last a lifetime, but in homes with higher footfall where sanding has to occur more often, it is clear that thicker wear layers should be chosen to ensure maximum lifespan. Refinish after sanding is also recommended. For thin wear layers, avoid hallways and communal areas that will quickly wear down the floor, and homes with children, pets or high footfall.

13mm engineered flooring is relatively thin, making it quite cost effective. A thinner floor has unique advantages - underfloor heating is better transferred; in rooms with lower ceilings, thin flooring can make all the difference if tall furniture is to be installed; and doors that don’t have much space underneath would catch on thicker planks. We recommend measuring up from the subfloor to see which thickness you require. Thin engineered floors are stronger than thin solid floors due to the construction of the supporting materials.
