Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring Installation:
Method 1 - ‘Floating floor’. This is a popular method in which PVA glue is used along the groove joints on a tongue and groove or click floor, so the tongue once inserted will stay put. This strong bond helps keep the planks stable. No adhesive or nails are used elsewhere, and the floor is simply laid on top of the subfloor. This method allows the floor to breath as it isn’t fixed. Underlays should be used with this method.
Method 2 - Sticking the floor down. You can use flooring adhesives or a ‘secret nailing’ method to keep the flooring attached to the subfloor underneath. This is the preferred to the floating floor method, and ensures the floor stays highly stable without changing its appearance.
Laminate Flooring Installation:
Laminate flooring is easily installed with the floating floor method in which the planks simply click together. Alternatively, for extra stability an adhesive may be used. It is common and advised to use an underlay underneath laminate flooring.
LVT is installed either through the floating floor method due to the click joining system, or glued to the subfloor with adhesive. This is the same method as with laminate flooring, except underlay is less commonly used.
Here are a few important tips:
- Always leave a 10mm expansion gap.
- Install flooring on a level sub floor.
- Leave engineered flooring to acclimatise for at least 48 hours in the room it is due to be installed in.
- Leave solid wood flooring to acclimatise for at least 7 days in the room it is due to be installed in.
- Leave laminate or LVT flooring to acclimatise for at least 24 hours in the room it is due to be installed in.
